WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SOIL SAMPLING
WHERE SHOULD YOU TAKE YOUR SAMPLES?
Regular soil sampling will give you a field by field analysis of how your fields are doing. With this information, you’ll be able to tailor your nutrient strategy to accommodate the different fertility levels of your individual fields. By taking all the nutrients into account during soil sampling, you’ll be able to achieve a perfect balance in the soil so that the fertiliser can be effectively taken up by your growing crop.
It can be helpful to create a soil sampling map to define different areas. This will inform you where you need to take your samples, and will help you identify various fields or management blocks individually. Matching these up to the results you receive lets you build a more efficient fertiliser strategy, saving you money and making your farm more productive.
1.How To Take Core Samples?
Soil sampling is easy, and with our sampling tool you’ll be done in no time. Here’s how to do it:
- Take a sample every 2 to 4 ha
- Walk in a W shaped pattern across the sampling area
- Take separate samples from areas that are very different in type, history, slope or drainage
- Avoid unusual areas, such as around drinking troughs or where manure has been heaped
- Take at least 20 cores to the full 10cm depth
- Place in your own container, and label for identification
2. When To Take Samples
Sampling should take place every 3 – 5 years, as nutrients can change gradually over time. Problem areas may require more regular sampling, to check how added P and K are improving the soil. Soil sampling usually takes place between September and March. You may need to wait some time if you have recently treated the field, for example:
- Lime: Allow two years or more for an accurate pH reading
- Fertiliser: At least three months if you have applied P and K fertiliser
- Slurry / manure: Wait for at least three months after the last application
Waiting longer periods of time will ensure your results are more accurate, so try to schedule your soil sampling at the most appropriate time for your farm.
3. Costs & Benefits To Soil Sampling
Soil testing represents a relatively small annual cost to landowners and farmers overall. You’ll get back field by field information about your farm, giving you important insight into how to get the best out of your land.
A standard test includes pH, P and K testing, which is taken once every five years, on a 10-acre plot of land, will cost in the region of €0.50 per acre per year. This type of test will also include N, P and K advice, as well as testing for lime. The exact cost of your test will depend on the lab you are using and the level of detail you are looking for.
